The Best Backyard Mosquito Control

If you suffer from an overload of mosquito bites every time you go outside, I am sharing the best backyard mosquito control and it is an outdoor game-changer: The Thermacell Patio Shield Mosquito Repeller. The best part of all—it does not include any kind of bug spray.

Now that we are in the dog days of summer, it seems like the mosquitos are relentless. I feel like every time I’m outside, the mosquitos just flock to me. I haven’t decided if it’s because I’m so sweet or quite the opposite! Haha!

Bug Spray Just Won’t Cut It

Russ, Wrango, and I love to sit on our deck in the evenings enjoying drinks and sharing the events of our day. Within five minutes outside, I have mosquito bites. I have invested in lots of bug spray, even the organic kind without deet. However, I always feel like I have to shower before I go to bed so I don’t smell bug spray all night.

Russ and Wrango

We have also tried yard sprays, but they only last a day or two. We have even tried tiki torches, citronella oil, citronella candles, essential oils, mosquito traps, and bug zappers. The other problem with many of the various mosquito repellants on the market is they are full of harsh chemicals.

After a lot of research and a lot of trial and error, I have discovered the best backyard mosquito control: The Thermacell Patio Shield Mosquito Repeller.

Thermacell Mosquito Repeller

The Thermacell Patio Shield Mosquito Repeller sits on our deck, is only about eight inches tall, and keeps the mosquitos away. In my opinion, Thermacell products are the most effective mosquito repellents on the market and are the best backyard mosquito control I have found.

This little gadget has seriously changed my view of summer and hanging out on our deck while enjoying the great outdoors. It comes in a few different options, several colors, and is easy to use. I got the Thermacell Patio Shield Mosquito Repeller because it uses butane cartridges. Thermacell also has a rechargeable battery option, but I tend to forget to recharge the battery so I prefer the butane option.

Mosquito Control

Thermacell products cover a 15-foot zone of mosquito protection for your outdoor space. The device provides up to 12 hours of protection with one fuel cartridge. Also, they are deet-free, scent-free, and have no flame.

Although the Thermacell Patio Shield Mosquito Repeller is scent-free, it does use a small repellant mat that contains active ingredients in order to repel mosquitos. The mosquito mat also contains inactive ingredients that release the mosquito repellent into the air. According to the Thermacell website, “Our fuel-powered repellent mats use allethrin as the repellent active ingredient.” They also state on their website, “Our synthetic allethrin formula is inspired by repellent extracts found in plants.” The best part is that the product is people and pet-friendly.

A Few Tips When Using the Repeller

The best way to use the Thermacell device is to turn it on for about 10 minutes before you plan to sit outside. This step is important and will provide the best results. The only times I have actually ended up with mosquito bites is when I didn’t turn it on ahead of time.

Mosquito Control

It uses little blue pads, called a repellant mat, and the pad is heated to extract the allethrin formula. If the pad doesn’t get hot it doesn’t extract the formula to keep the mosquitos away. Turning on the repeller is easy, you just have to remember to do it shortly before you go outside.

Since the repeller covers a small area of 15 square feet, you may want to get more than one if you have a large outdoor area. Also, make sure to keep extra pads and butane so you don’t run out because each pad only lasts four hours.

Other Tips to Avoid Mosquitos

Standing water and stagnant water are a breeding ground for mosquitos. Try to avoid areas like this when outdoor entertaining or just enjoying a low-key evening. It can also be helpful to wear long pants and long sleeves when you want to avoid mosquitos.

Mosquito Control

Fish ponds are also areas that can have a mosquito problem. The Thermacell Patio Shield Mosquito Repeller is perfect for a day of fishing because one butane cartridge can last up to 12 hours. The blue repellant mat only lasts four hours, but can easily be changed out. Its ease of use and compactness make it the perfect addition to your outdoor adventures.

Enjoying Summer Without the Mosquitos

For long-lasting protection against pesky mosquitoes at all of your outdoor events, the Thermacell Patio Shield Mosquito Repeller is a great option and one of the best mosquito repellents I have used.

xoxo,
Molly

This looks like such a great product to have. We also enjoy sitting out in the yard on nice evenings with our kids, so this is a great option without having to spray down everyone each night. Thank you for your suggestion.

Thanks, Michelle! I totally agree about not having to spray down everyone. Once we go inside, I have to take a shower after using bug spray because the smell is so strong!

I’m excited to try this. I make the organic spray. I use it all of the time. I’d love to have the extra added protection though. Thanks for this.
