The History of the Copeland Spode Christmas Tree Pattern
The Spode Christmas Tree pattern was introduced in 1938 and is the most successful china pattern made by Copeland Spode. According to the Spode History Blog, the Christmas Tree pattern was wildly successful and “saved the company during lean times on more than one occasion.” Although the Spode Company closed in 2009, the intellectual property and trade names were acquired by Portmeirion, and the Christmas Tree pattern is still produced and sold today.
The pattern we all love today began with a bit of a different pattern. The Spode History Blog explains that Design Director, Harold Holdway, created the Christmas Tree design. He originally began with a bit of a different pattern, which had gifts and tinsel on the tree itself. The final design put the packages around the bottom of the tree, which was more in line with how Americans decorated their trees.
How I Acquired My Copeland Spode Christmas Dinnerware
In 2022, I shared a blog post about The Hidden Treasures of Antiques and Vintage Items, in which I talked about my neighbor who lived in an old house and was a junker and an antique collector. The Copeland Spode Christmas Tree was one of the patterns of bone china that was sold in her estate sale after she passed away. Since then, I have picked up various pieces when I find them.
Stylish Spode Christmas Tree Table Setting Ideas
The festive centerpiece was so easy to put together and very inexpensive. Start with a table runner down the center of your dining room table, then add your beautiful centerpieces. I love using a rustic burlap table runner because it’s inexpensive and will go with just about any table décor.
I laid long stems of faux greenery on top of the burlap table runner and tucked in shorter pieces of faux greenery with pinecones and berries on them. The reindeer Christmas candle was a gift, but candlestick holders with candles would create a beautiful table for the holidays. In my Pumpkin Tablescape blog post, I used beeswax candles that could easily be incorporated into table décor any time of year.
Star of the Show for your Christmas Tablescape
The Spode Christmas Tree china will be the star of the show on this holiday table, regardless of the centerpiece you choose to create. On my table, each place setting has a dinner plate with a salad plate on top. The Spode Christmas Tree stemless wine glasses are from Home Goods. I found matching vintage table linens on Facebook Marketplace and used gold flatware to coordinate with the gold rim of the wine glasses.
I prefer to fold my napkins and lay them to the left of the plate. If you want to add more holiday decor, many department stores sell napkin rings that match the pattern. You could also tie a bow around your napkins with a red or green ribbon.
Spode has many matching serving pieces, but I have not been fortunate enough to come across any that are vintage. Since I don’t have any Christmas Tree serving dishes, I use vintage-cut glass platters and bowls when serving our Christmas dinner. Spode also makes matching mugs, which would be perfect for serving mulled wine or hot chocolate.
To create a more elegant look, add a crisp white or green tablecloth to your dining table. You could also add green or gold chargers beneath the plates to elevate the setting. If you are using a burlap table runner like me, you could use a wooden charger for the rustic feel.
