Since this Chocolate Fudge Icing Recipe takes little effort, it is one of my go-to recipes when I’m asked to bring a dessert to a potluck or have unexpected company. Your friends and family will think you spent hours creating your delicious dessert.
Fudge frosting is extremely versatile and can top off more than just cakes. It is delicious on cookies, brownies, and even drizzled over fruit. If you think a chocolate cake with chocolate icing is too decadent, substitute a white cake instead.

Ingredients Needed for Chocolate Fudge Cake Icing
- Butter
- Sugar
- Dutch-processed cocoa powder
- Whole milk
- Vanilla extract
Equipment Needed
How to Make Quick and Easy Chocolate Fudge Cake Icing
1. Add all of the ingredients to the saucepan.
2. Bring the ingredients to a boil, and stir constantly.
3. Once the chocolate mixture is at a rolling boil, set the timer for one minute. Continue stirring the entire time.
4. Remove the saucepan from the heat and cool to the desired consistency.
5. Frost your dessert with an offset spatula.

How to Store the Best Fudge Frosting
This icing stores well and can be made up to two days in advance. Store it in an airtight container at room temperature for up to two days, or refrigerate for up to a week. Place a layer of plastic wrap directly on the icing before refrigerating, because this will keep a skin from forming.

This chocolate fudge cake icing can also be frozen for up to 3 months. Let it sit in the refrigerator overnight, and warm slightly before frosting your dessert.
Substitutions and Modifications for Chocolate Icing
- Substitute dairy-free butter and dairy-free milk, such as coconut milk, for a vegan version.
- For a rich chocolate flavor, use dark chocolate cocoa, or increase the Dutch-processed cocoa amount by 1/4 cup.
- Add 1 tablespoon of espresso for a bolder tasting frosting.
- Fold in nuts or chocolate chips for added texture.
- Add 1 teaspoon of peppermint flavoring for a chocolate mint frosting.
- Add a pinch of salt to cut the sweetness.
- Use Dutch-processed cocoa powder or natural cocoa powder, because both make the perfect indulgent chocolate frosting.

How to Serve the Best Chocolate Fudge Frosting
This delicious frosting recipe isn’t just for cakes, although it makes any cake taste like it came from a bakery. This frosting is not the same consistency as homemade fluffy chocolate fudge frosting or chocolate buttercream frosting. The consistency of this perfect frosting is similar to a chocolate ganache, but it tastes like biting into a piece of fudge.

Once the frosting has cooled, I love to pour it over a chocolate Bundt cake and let it roll down the sides. Pour a little at a time so it will push more icing down the sides. As it continues to cool, it will stick to the sides of the cake.

Other ways to use homemade Chocolate Fudge Cake Icing:
- After it cools to a spreadable consistency, frost the tops of cupcakes.
- For fudge brownies, pour warm icing over a pan of brownies.
- Dip cookies into the icing, or frost with an offset spatula once cooled to a spreadable consistency.
- Pour warm icing over a white or chocolate sheet cake.
